Types of Philodendrons
Whether you are new to plant shopping or an experienced plant lover, there are many types of philodendrons to choose from. These are large, flowering plants that belong to the family Araceae.
Finger-Leaf Philodendron
Often referred to as the “Finger Leaf” or “Fun Bun,” the Philodendron Goeldii is a tropical plant that is easily grown indoors or out. This plant grows best in high humidity and moist soil. During the growing season, it needs to be watered twice a week.
The Goeldii has leaves that grow in a spiral pattern. They are thick and glossy and can be up to twelve fingers wide. They grow well in temperatures between 50 degrees and 86 degrees Fahrenheit.
When growing the Goeldii indoors, it is important to keep the air humidity high. This will help prevent fungal diseases and root rot. However, the plant will slow down in the winter months.
White Knight Philodendron
Originally from humid tropical areas of South America, the Philodendron White Knight is a highly sought-after house plant. This plant has an impressive growth rate, and it can reach heights of three meters. However, it is susceptible to cold weather. To keep it healthy, it needs a proper watering routine.
The Philodendron White Knight thrives in moderate to high humidity. It also requires bright indirect light. Depending on the home’s environment, its growth can vary.
The plant grows best in a sunny east or west-facing window. It can also be kept in a greenhouse. Using a humidifier can help increase the humidity.
Red-Leaf Philodendron
Known as the “Red-leaf philodendron”, this is a dependable houseplant. It is also popular for its waxy red stems. The leaves of this plant are burgundy red-purple. Philodendrons are usually quite adaptable.
To get the best results for your philodendron, it is essential to provide adequate light and water. You can also use a fungicide. A fungicide will help prevent the growth of bacterial leaf spots. A copper fungicide is also effective.
If you notice that your Red-leaf philodendron has yellowed or brown leaves, this can be due to an infestation of spider mites. You can get rid of spider mites by using insecticidal soap. You can also apply a solution of rubbing alcohol.
Mayoi Philodendron
Known as the Mayoi, the Philodendron mayoi is a beautiful jungle plant that can be grown indoors. It has unique, glossy foliage. The plant is very easy to care for. However, there are some pests and diseases that can be a problem.
Philodendrons are very susceptible to bacterial infections, so it’s important to check the leaves for signs of infection. If you find an infection, you should treat it as soon as possible. You can do this by washing the leaves with a solution of baking soda and dish soap. You should also remove the affected leaves immediately.
Pedatum
Pedatum philodendron types are easy to care for and will thrive indoors. The foliage is beautiful and can help improve the air quality in your home. However, this plant is also susceptible to certain pests. These include spider mites and mealybugs. You can use neem oil or a mild detergent and water solution to get rid of the pests.
Pedatum philodendrons have light green leaves that are heart-shaped and glossy. They have distinctive lobes that develop as the leaves mature. The leaf edges are sometimes marked with half-moons.
The foliage grows up to three feet wide and five feet tall in clusters. It can be grown in a variety of climates. However, it is best to grow it outdoors.
Erubescens
Among all the types of Philodendrons, Philodendron Erubescens stands out from the rest. This plant is native to South America. It is a fast-growing plant that can grow up to 6 meters high.
Philodendron erubescens grows best with light from the north and east. The plant is not as cold-tolerant as other varieties. It requires a moderate room temperature of 15 to 180C.
The foliage of Philodendron Erubescens is glossy and heart-shaped. It has red highlights on the underside of its leaves. The petioles are approximately the same length as the leaf blades.
Selloum
Several unique Philodendron types are available, each with its own distinct characteristics. Some are quite hardy, others require a little extra care and attention. Some even require special lighting or care. Here are a few of the most common.
The Hope Selloum is a beautiful ornamental plant that grows well in warmer climates. The foliage is a great addition to wreaths and foilage creations. It also makes a great hanging plant. With proper care, the plant can live for up to 20 years.
Lacerum is an inexpensive plant, especially when compared to other Philodendron types. It is a Caribbean island native and can thrive in a variety of conditions. With a little space and proper care, the foliage can grow to four feet in size.
