Got The Bathroom Blues

If you’re not happy with your bathroom, you’re not alone. Because it has to be so functional, it is one of the trickiest rooms in the home to get right. You want to make it look beautiful, but it can be hard when you have fittings and fixtures are all over the place. To make matters worse, you’re often low on space.

Making your bathroom look great, however, simply requires following a formula. Here’s how to scrub away your bathroom blues.

End The Clutter

When it comes to creating a beautiful bathroom that will make you feel uplifted, clutter is your biggest enemy. Too much junk lying around wrecks the visuals and makes you feel like you live in the middle of a bombsite.

Unfortunately, bathrooms are a clutter magnet, especially if you are the type of person who enjoys using a lot of products.

So what’s the solution? Well, in reality, there are several. The first is to find attractive ways to store all the items that need to be out on display. So, for instance, instead of placing a commercial soap dispenser next to your sink, use a designer one instead that fits in with the theme of your room. If you need to store extra toilet paper, then place a basket next to the WC for it.

Everything else (like toothpaste and brushes, deodorants, and so on) you can usually hide in a cabinet. The only requirement is that you remember to put it away after you use it.

You can also find clever ways to store the items that you need without adding more bulky furniture to space. Vanities with shelving underneath for towels, for instance, are a wonderful addition,

Add Some Flowers And Fresh Scents

Bathrooms can get a little stinky – for both obvious and not-so-obvious reasons. It’s a good idea, therefore, to include items that absorb bad smells and emit fresh ones of their own.

Start by finding a way to add charcoal to your bathroom. Charcoal naturally absorbs smells and is a great way to make the room feel fresher, even just after somebody uses it. Be sure to install an extractor fan so that you can prevent mould growth. And add scents and flowers where appropriate.

The best scents are natural. Burning a candle during busy periods, for instance, is a great way to deal with unpleasant smells and keep everything beautiful. You may also want to bring in plants, like orchids, that can thrive in a moisture-rich environment.

Change Your Shower Curtain For Something Better

Cheap shower curtains are always disappointing. They look tacky and, worse still, they have a nasty habit of collecting mould. It’s not great.

It’s a good idea, therefore, to swap out your old one for a newer, better design. As with many home furnishings, the more you pay, the better the results you can expect. Top shower curtains look almost as good as regular drapes – but with a distinct bathroom style all of their own.

Add Clever Storage

There are all kinds of ways that you can store bathroom items neatly and conveniently without clutter. Popular options include mirrored cabinets, floor-to-ceiling shelving, and wall-leaning racks.

Try if you can to choose neutral pieces of furniture that will just blend into your bathroom’s background.

Pick New Rugs And Mats

Just like old shower curtains, aged rugs and mats can really put a downer on your bathroom. Matted, smelly, and discolored items instantly sour the mood and, in some cases, can even make you feel a little uneasy.

Manufacturers are getting much better and making attractive rugs and mats that are suitable for bathroom conditions. These tend to last substantially longer than conventional counterparts and, often, provide you with a handy non-slip surface to keep you safe.

The sheer range of options is impressive too. You don’t have to go in plain white anymore. Some brands now offer full-on Persian rugs for the bathroom. And these have special moisture-draining properties which means that they can withstand getting wet daily.

Switch Up Your Loo

Is your toilet getting you down? If so, why not switch it to a new one?

Old-school toilets did the job. But newer varieties improve the experience both for you and your guests. Top-of-the-range models have things like automatic flushing and water-sparing technologies. They also actively reduce smells and have seat fittings that won’t slam.

If you’re having loo trouble, you can also learn how to fix a toilet. It’s actually simpler than you think and doesn’t always require an advanced plumbing qualification.

Add Some Art

Bathrooms needn’t be devoid of art. Hanging art on the wall helps to make your bathrooms feel less clinical and more like actual living spaces. If you don’t like the idea of art, you can also hang designer mirrors (which are often works of art in and of themselves).

If you have a cheap mirror in your bathroom that isn’t adding anything (other than something you can use to watch yourself brushing your teeth) then replace it. Some modern bathroom mirrors have LEDs built into the back of them, allowing them to self-illuminate whenever you walk into the room.

Make Your Light Fittings More Memorable

The same approach applies to light fittings. Lights don’t have to be generic and clinical just because they’re in the bathroom. They can be just as beautiful as the rest of the lights in your home, if not more so.

You don’t have to spend a fortune of brand new lights for your bathroom if money is a worry. Instead, you can upcycle old light frames and shades using metallic paint or new fabric coverings.

Change Your Cabinet Knobs

Lastly, your cabinets can sometimes let the side down. But replacing the existing knobs with new ones can totally change how they look and feel. Plus, this way, you can keep renovation costs down.

Getting the bathroom blues, therefore, isn’t a condition that necessarily stays with you for life. Instead, there’s plenty that you can do to transform your bathroom into a beautiful, positive space that you love.
