How to Grow Lamium
Trying to grow lamium is a challenge – there are many different varieties and they all differ in their tolerance for cold. The key is to find the right one for your garden. This will ensure you get the best results possible.
Perennial Groundcover
Originally originating in Europe, the Lamium is a perennial ground cover plant. It can be grown in many types of soil, from alkaline to acid. It’s also adaptable to shady conditions. Lamium is a good choice for shady areas of your garden.
This ground cover grows well in moist and humus-rich soils. Lamium is also deer resistant. It grows well in partial shade, though it will grow in full shade if needed.
Lamium’s foliage is variable, with many varieties having white, pink, purple, or lime green variegations. Most species grow between four and eight inches tall. It’s also a self-seeding ground cover plant and can be divided in the fall.
Lamium grows best in slightly moist, well-drained soil. It’s a versatile plant, and it does well in dry shade. It’s also winter hardy and cold-resistant.
GC-MS Analysis of Essential Oils
GC-MS analysis of essential oils for growing lamium is a technique that is used to separate and identify constituents within a mixture of essential oils. The resulting spectrum is like a fingerprint for the chemical composition of the essential oil. The resulting report gives the constituents detected and their percentages. This can be helpful for aromatherapists who are trying to evaluate the quality of an essential oil. However, it does not provide a definitive answer to the quality of the oil.
The essential oils were extracted from seven air dried plant species. The chemicals were separated on 30 m long capillary columns. The separation procedure was carried out using a HP 6890 gas chromatograph and HP 5973 mass selective detector.
The essential oil was found to be rich in alcohol and phenolic compounds. These constituents are linked to certain therapeutic properties.
GC-MS Analysis of Terpenoids
GC-MS analysis of terpenoids in lamium maculatum was performed to determine their antimicrobial activity and to characterize their constituents. Lamium is a genus of perennial herbaceous plants. These plants are traditionally used in some countries as food. They are also used as food additives and in the fragrance industry. Lamium maculatum has an essential oil which was used to determine its antimicrobial activity against house flies.
Terpenoids are highly volatile compounds and are usually analyzed by gas chromatography. They show isomerism, and their relative contents change depending on the method of extraction, evaporation, and decarboxylation. The study found that most of the components were optical centers.
The compounds were identified using commercially available analytical standards. A ten-point calibration curve was prepared for a range of 0.2 to 100 mg/mL.
GC-MS Analysis of Phenylpropanoid Glycosides
GC-MS analysis of phenylpropanoid glycosides in Lamium species is of interest because these compounds have been studied for their potential pain modulation effects. However, the mechanisms of action of these compounds are not known. In this study, we aimed to identify and isolate these compounds. In addition, we used a disc diffusion method to assess their antimicrobial activity against fungi and bacteria. We also examined their bioactivity in human neutrophils.
Phenylpropanoid glycosides are usually esterified with a dihydroxyphenylethanol moiety. In Lamiales, phenylpropanoid esters are commonly found. Phenylpropanoid glycosides have antiinflammatory properties, which are attributed to the inhibition of NF-kB translocation. They also have antioxidant properties.
In Lamii albi flos, phenylpropanoid glycosides and iridoids are the predominant compounds. A variety of iridoids have been identified, including the tyrosine-derived compounds cornin and penstemoside. Other compounds identified include oleanolic acid, terpenes, and monoterpenes.
Terpenoids Found in L. Maculatum and L. Garganicum
Several essential oils are being studied for their bioactive properties. One such plant is Lamium maculatum. Its essential oil has a high antibacterial activity. Moreover, it may be used as a natural insecticide. Moreover, it is a source of phenolics and flavonoids.
In the present study, Lamium maculatum and Lamium garganicum essential oils were investigated for their antibacterial activity. In addition, the chemical composition of these two species was determined by GC-MS/FID. Besides, they were screened for cytotoxic activity and antioxidant activity.
The essential oils were characterized by high content of terpenes and non-terpenes, as well as fatty acids. They were also evaluated against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The essential oil was obtained by steam distillation. It was lighter than water and had a characteristic aroma.
